The Houston Astros acquire Brian McCann from the Yankees

The Houston Astros have acquired 32-year old lefty swinging catcher Brian McCann and $11 million bucks (the Astros will be on the hook for $23 million bucks the next two years) for 21-year old righty starting pitcher Albert Abreu and 20-year old righty starting pitcher Jorge Guzman.

McCann will give the Astros another lefty power bat in 2017 and 2018.  McCann played in 130 games for the Yankees last year and he was 104 of 429 (.242 avg, .748 OPS) with 56 runs scored, 20 homers, 58 RBI and 1 stolen base.  McCann has now played in 1,510 games in his first 12 years in the show and he is 1,397 of 5,252 (.266 avg, .799 OPS) with 645 runs scored, 245 homers, 888 RBI and 24 stolen bases.  McCann has been an All-Star 7 times and he has also won 6 Silver Slugger Awards so far in his career.  McCann has hit at least 20 homers in nine years in a row!

Abreu came into last season as the Astros’ #12 prospect according to Baseball America.  He pitched in 24 games (16 starts) in two levels of A-ball last year and he was 3-8 with 4 saves, a 3.72 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  Abreu pitched in 51 games (37 starts) in his three years in minors for the Astros and he was 8-13 with 5 saves, a 3.16 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  Guzman pitched in 13 games (8 starts) in two levels of Rookie-ball last year in which he was 3-4 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.  Guzman pitched in 30 games (20 starts) in his first two years in the minors and he is 6-8 with a 4.63 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.
