The Astros are calling up 23-year old righty starting pitcher Jarred Cosart to replace 28-year old righty Lucas Harrell (he is moving to the pen) in the starting rotation. Cosart pitched in 18 games (17 starts) in AAA-ball for the Astros this year and he was 7-4 with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Cosart has given up 74 hits and 50 walks while whiffing 93 batters in his first 93 innings this year. Cosart is going to have to tighten up control if he’s going to succeed in the majors. Cosart has pitched in 87 games (82 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 32-26 with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. The Astros got Cosart as part of the return for trading Hunter Pence to the Phillies a couple of years ago, so a lot of eyes are going to be on him in Houston. Harrell pitched in 20 games (19 starts) for the Astros this year and he was 5-9 with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. He has been brutal so far in July. He has pitched in 2 games (1 start) f0r the Astros so far this month and he is 0-1 with a 12.15 ERA and a 2.55 WHIP. He has given up 9 hits (3 homers) and 8 walks while whiffing 3 batters in his first 6 2/3 innings this month. He will need to turn things around soon if he wants to keep his spot on the Astros’ 25-man roster.
